Cupping Therapy: Uses, Benefits, and Safety

Cupping therapy is an ancient technique that has been used for centuries in many cultures to relieve pain, improve circulation, and support overall wellbeing. At Junyu’s Acupuncture and Massage Clinic in Browns Plains, we often incorporate cupping into treatment plans for clients who want a natural, non‑invasive way to reduce tension and promote healing.
With over 37 years of Traditional Chinese Medicine experience, JunYu Zhou uses cupping as a standalone treatment or in combination with acupuncture and massage to achieve better results.
What Is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping involves placing special cups — traditionally made of glass, bamboo, or plastic — on the skin to create gentle suction. This suction lifts the skin and underlying tissue, increasing blood flow to the area and encouraging the release of tight muscles.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, cupping is thought to move stagnant energy (Qi) and blood, helping to restore balance in the body. From a modern perspective, the increased circulation may help reduce muscle soreness, inflammation, and stiffness.
Common Uses for Cupping
Many people choose cupping to address:
Muscle pain and tightness in the back, shoulders, and neck
Sports recovery for athletes or active individuals
Headaches and migraines related to muscle tension
Stress and fatigue by releasing physical tension
Poor circulation in targeted areas
Support for respiratory issues like chest congestion (used alongside other treatments)
Benefits of Cupping Therapy
Muscle Relaxation – Loosens tight muscle fibres and fascia, improving flexibility.
Improved Blood Flow – Brings nutrient‑rich blood to sore or injured areas.
Pain Relief – May help reduce discomfort from injuries, arthritis, and chronic muscle tension.
Stress Reduction – Many clients find cupping deeply relaxing and restorative.
Complementary Care – Works well alongside acupuncture or massage for faster recovery.
Is Cupping Safe?
When performed by a trained, registered practitioner, cupping is generally considered safe. At our clinic:
We use clean, hygienic cups for every session
Treatments are adjusted to suit your comfort level
You may notice round marks or light bruising on the skin — these are painless and usually fade within a few days
Cupping is not suitable for everyone, so we always assess your health history before recommending it.
What to Expect in a Cupping Session
A typical cupping session lasts around 20 to 30 minutes. Cups are placed on the skin and gently suctioned, either left in place or moved across the muscles in a technique known as “gliding cupping.” You may feel a mild pulling sensation, but most clients find it relaxing.
At Junyu’s Acupuncture and Massage Clinic, cupping can also be combined with massage or acupuncture in a 60‑minute treatment for even greater benefit.
